Climb up the Rax from Preiner Gscheid via the Karl Kantner-Steig (A/B) and descent via the Schlangenweg
The tour starts at the parking Preiner Gscheid (GPS: 47.676248, 15.721980) and first follows the trail up to Siebenbrunnenwiese / Waxriegelhaus. It then continues a few meters on the Schlangenweg but turns left at the first U-turn into the Karl-Kantnersteig (see signposts). The tour then uses the Karl-Kantnersteig via ferrata (A/B) up towards the Karl-Ludwig Haus. After a well-deserved break, the tour descends via the Schlangenweg bck to the Siebenbrunnenwiese, bypasses the Waxriegelhaus and then leads back to the parking on the same way as the ascent.
Please note that a full “Klettersteigset” (via ferrata set) is recommended for this tour.
Tour Description
| 00:00 | Start at the parking lot Preiner Gscheid (GPS: 47.676248, 15.721980) and follow the trail up northwards towards Schlangenweg. You can stay at the forest road or short-cut via the trails. |
| 00:30 | At the Gflotzhütte (hut), turn right and follow up the trail northwards towards Siebenbrunnenwiese. |
| 00:35 | Enjoy the awesome view up to Rax from Siebenbrunnenwiese. Keep straight ahead and first follow the Schlangenweg trail. |
| 00:55 | At the crossing, turn left into the small trail towards Karl Kantnersteig (see signpost “Karl-Ludwig-Haus über Karl Kantnersteig”). |
| 01:10 | At the begin of Karl Kantnersteig, put on your via ferrata set and turn right, climbing up the via ferrata. |
| 01:35 | Turn right and follow up the Karl Kantnersteig (white-red-white markings). |
| 01:37 | Turn left and follow up the Karl Kantnersteig (white-red-white markings). |
| 01:45 | Turn right and follow the trail up to Karl-Ludwig-Haus. |
| 01:50 | Well deserved break ( ) at Karl-Ludwig-Haus. |
| 02:30 | Follow the steep trail eastwards down (along the fence). You optionally can use the slightly longer but not as steep trail with U-turns. |
| 02:35 | At the crossing, turn left and follow the Schlangenweg trail downwards (with its various U-turns). |
| 02:50 | At the crossing, turn sharply right (U-turn) and continue descending via the Schlangenweg. |
| 03:10 | At the crossing, turn left and follow the forest street towards Waxriegelhaus. |
| 03:15 | Well deserved break at Waxriegelhaus (). |
| 03:45 | Follow the trail southwards down back to the parking. The trail will turn into the forest road that was used for ascending. |
| 04:15 | Back at the parking, end of the tour. |
