Hike up the Hohe Wand from Puchberg via the Gelände and descending through Springlessteig (A)
The tour starts at the train station Puchberg am Schneeberg and first follows some easy but promising trails (exciting views towards Schneeberg in the back) through meadows towards the Grünbacher Sattel.
The tour then ascends through the Krumböcksteig up to the Gelände (aka “Geländ”) bypassing the impressive (and climbable) Hausstein (UIAA I) which offers again an impressive view towards Schneeberg. After a well-deserved break at the Gelände, the tour then descends towards Rastkreuzsattel and then ascends again till reaching the highest point of the Hohe Wand, the Plackles.
The tour then follows the trail towards Eicherthütte and then the Hubertushaus and finally descends through the easy via ferrata Springlessteig (A). After the descent, the tour then leads towards the train station Unterhöflein which is the end of the tour.
This tour is easily reachable via public transportation (train R98). It is recommended to either travel to Puchberg via the train or park the car at the train station Unterhöflein and then use the train to reach the starting point Puchberg.
The Springlessteig is an easy via ferrata and does not offer a lot of artificial protection (cables). A via ferrata set therefore is not necessary.
Tour Description
| 00:00 | Start at train station Puchberg am Schneeberg and first walk through the park (eastwards). Enjoy the first beautiful impressions of the small lake and the Schneeberg in the back. |
| 00:05 | Follow the trail eastwards, passing by Billa and crossing the main street. Follow the signpost towards Grünbacher Sattel (marked white-red-white). |
| 00:20 | Attention! Keep right and turn into the small trail (can be easily overseen) towards Grünbacher Sattel. |
| 00:35 | Stay straight ahead and follow the trail towards Grünbacher Sattel which turns into a paved road. Follow the signposts towards Grünbacher Sattel (first turn right and then keep left). |
| 01:15 | At the main street, turn right, follow it a few meters towards Grünbacher Sattel. |
| 01:20 | At the Grünbacher Sattel, turn left into the gravel road and enjoy the view back towards Schneeberg. Follow the gravel road northwards. |
| 01:30 | Turn right into the trail and then at the first crossing, turn left into the Krumböcksteig (leading towards the Gelände). |
| 01:40 | [Optional]: Climb up the Hausstein through the normal way (UIAA I). Enjoy the impressive view towards Schneeberg from there. |
| 01:55 | Continue on the trail (Krumböcksteig) upwards towards Gelände (you will cross several forest roads). |
| 02:20 | At the crossing, turn right and follow the trail for a few meters till reaching the Gelände. |
| 02:25 | Well deserved break ( ) at the Geländehütte. |
| 03:15 | Follow the trail northeastwards along the ridge towards Rastkreuzsattel. |
| 03:30 | At the Rastkreuzsattel, cross the street and continue hiking straight ahead towards Plackles. |
| 03:40 | At the crossing, keep left and follow the marked trail upwards to Plackels. |
| 04:00 | Pass by the Plackles (antenna) and follow the gravel road eastwards. |
| 04:15 | Well deserved break at Eicherthütte. Enjoy the view at the Große Kanzel (best enjoyed with a refreshment ). |
| 04:45 | Continue on the trail eastwards towards Hubertushaus. |
| 05:00 | At the Hubertushaus, turn right and follow the Springlessteig via ferrata downwards. |
| 05:30 | At the crossing, turn left and follow the trail towards Höflein (see signpost). |
| 05:45 | In Höflein, follow the street southwards towards Bahnhof Unterhöflein (train station). |
| 05:55 | At the crossing, turn right, cross the meadow and before the river turn right again (follow markings!). |
| 06:00 | Follow the trail along the river, cross the main street and continue following the trail along the river southwards. |
| 06:10 | At the end of the trail, turn right into the street, follow it for a few meters and then turn left towards the train station of Unterhöflein. |
| 06:15 | Arriving at the train station Unterhöflein (end of the tour). |
