Via Ferrata: “Hohe Wand Kleine & Große Klause (A/B)”

Easy via ferrata (Cat. A/B) up the rear side of the Hohe Wand through the “Kleine Klause” (Naturfreunde Steig) to the Waldeggerhaus (hut) and then down via the “Große Klause” (Waldegger Steig), allowing promising views towards Schneeberg and Ötscher.

Promising tour at the rear side of the Hohe Wand, climbing up and down using easy via ferratas

This promising tour uses two very easy via ferratas (Cat. A/B, A – suitable for beginners) but allows stunning views towards Schneeberg and on good weather conditions even till Ötscher. The tour begins in Dürnbach, at the opposite side of the former Nazwirt. It follows up a nice trail through the forest (following the red/yellow markings and signposts towards Kleine Klause) and finally leads into the Kleine Klause (or Naturfreunde) via ferrata. The ferrata itself uses many iron rungs and some ladders (most of the time no cable) but is easy to climb.
The Kleine Klause ends at a crossing close to the street (turn left) and then leads towards the Waldeggerhaus. From there, the trail allows an awesome view towards Schneeberg and on clear days even to Ötscher and beyond. After a break at the Waldeggerhaus the trail continues and descends towards the crossing to Große Klause (or Waldegger Steig – blue markings). This very easy via ferrata uses many iron ladders and passes by several caves. One of them can be even easily visited since its entrance is directly next to one of the longer iron ladders.
The trail then ends again in Dürnbach but can be extended visiting the big waterfall located in Dürnbach.

Please note that a “Klettersteigset” (via ferrata set) is optional (not needed) for sure-footed people.

Tip: The tour can be done in both directions. I personally recommend to climb the Kleine Klause up since it slightly more difficult than the Große Klause.
