Stage 5 of the Alpannonia® long distance trail from “Bernstein” towards “Geschriebenstein”
The Alpannonia® long distance trail combines in up to 7 stages a tour from the eastern alps in Austria towards the “pannonian lowlands” in Hungary. The entire trail is 125 km long and 3.800 meters in ascent. It is normally done in 7 days, starting in Fischbach (AT) and ending in Köszeg (HU). For more information visit www.alpannonia.at. |
The tour starts at the castle of Bernstein and then follows the marked trail using streets, trails and paths eastwards towards Geschriebenstein, the highest peak of Burgenland which is also located at the border between Austria and Hungary. The tour first leads towards Oberhasel and then through the forest towards Goberling. The tour then continues towards Unterkohlstätten and Oberkohlstätten before it finally ascents towards the two highest peaks of Burgenland, namely the Hirschenstein (862m) with its gigantic antenna and then the Geschriebenstein (884m) with its unique viewing platform providing a fascinating surround view (free of charge) to Hungary and Austria.

Interesting background information
The “Geschriebenstein” is the highest point in Burgenland and western Hungary.
The border between Austria and Hungary runs exactly through the middle of the viewing platform on the summit which was build in 1913 by the Austrians.
In 2001, the fall of the iron curtain finally allowed crossing the border here between Austria and Hungary.

Comment: | I was brought by car to Bernstein and picked up at Geschriebenstein (at the Ranch). If done not part of the alpannonia long distance trail, transportation to the starting and end point must be organised (there is only limited public transportation that does not operate at convenient hours). |
