Climb up Rax (Heukuppe) in winter via the Reißtalersteig via ferrata (A/B)
The tour starts at the parking Preiner Gscheid (GPS: 47.675986, 15.723112) and first follows the white-yellow-white marked Reißtalersteig trail upwards, passing the Reißtalerhütte (private hut), and continues on the trail till reaching the Reißtalersteig via ferrata (short, A/B). Follow the ferrata up till reaching the Heukuppe, the tour descends towards Karl-Ludwig Haus (recommended hut for lunch break) and then descends via the Schlangenweg back to the Preiner Gscheid.
Please note that a full “Klettersteigset” (via ferrata set) combined with crampons is recommended for this tour when done in winter!
Tour Description
| 00:00 | Start at the parking lot Preiner Gscheid (GPS: 47.675986, 15.723112) and follow the white-yellow-white marked trail (Reißtalersteig) westwards above the parking. |
| 00:30 | At the crossing, turn left and follow the Reißtalersteig towards Reißtalerhütte. |
| 00:50 | At the crossing, turn right and follow the white-yellow-white marked trail upwards towards Reißtalerhütte (NOT GH. Moasser). |
| 00:55 | At the crossing, stay on the white-yellow-white marked Reißtalersteig towards Reißtalerhütte (see signpost). |
| 01:00 | Short break (5 min) at the Reißtalerhütte (not serviced), enjoy the beautiful view and some refreshment. |
| 01:05 | Directly after the Reißtalerhütte, follow the small trail upwards (Reißtalersteig). |
| 01:15 | At the crossing, turn right and follow the white-yellow-white marked Reißtalersteig trail upwards. |
| 01:35 | At the crossing, keep straingt and follow the white-yellow-white marked Reißtalersteig trail upwards. |
| 01:50 | Short break at the start of the Reißtalersteig via ferrata (Cat. A/B). (A good place to put on your via ferrata set here) |
| 02:00 | Climb up the first rock at the Reißtalersteig, defining the entrance of the via ferrata. |
| 02:20 | The crossing towards Heukuppe marks the end of the (rather short) via ferrata. Turn left here to hike up to the Heukuppe for the second time. You will not be able to see the signpost in snow conditions! |
| 02:45 | At the crossing Reißtalersteig/Fuchslochsteig, follow the trail upwards to the Heukuppe. |
| 02:55 | Well deserved break at the Heukuppe, a perfect place to enjoy your self-brought “Gipfelbier” (). |
| 03:05 | Go back the trail downwards towards Karl-Ludwig-Haus. This time stay on the trail leftwards directly to the hut. |
| 03:25 | Well deserved lunch break at the Karl-Ludwig-Haus ( ). |
| 04:20 | After a break, follow the trail northwards but keep right and descent downwards via the Schlangenweg. |
| 05:00 | For an easy descent, follow the forrest road downwards till reaching the parking. |
| 05:30 | Back at the parking, end of the tour. |
