Climb up the Rax via the “Wildfährte” (B) towards the Habsburghaus and descent via the “Peter Jokel Steig” (A)
This promising tour starts at Hinternaßwald (GPS: 47.738543, 15.666547) and leads up to the Habsburghaus at the Rax. The tour ascends using the Wildfährte via ferrata (Cat. B, I) that offer awesome views and panoramic views. The via ferrata is fairly easy (cat. B, I) but is sometimes exposed and therefore require a sure food and no fear from heights. After having a well-deserved break at the Habsburghaus, the tour follows the Kaisersteig (normal way down) but then turns into the Peter Jokel Steig (cat. A) to descent back to the parking.
The Peter Jokel Steig (A) is pretty tricky when wet or on bad weather conditions. The descent can also be done by simply following the much easier (and also nicer) Kaisersteig which also leads back directly to the parking.
Please note that a full “Klettersteigset” (via ferrata set) is required for this tour!
Tour Description
| 00:00 | Start at the parking lot Hinternaßwald. The trail starts opposite of the small river (first following a tarmac road). |
| 00:10 | The tarmac road leads into a forest road. Follow the road. |
| 00:25 | At the crossing, first follow the road straight-ahead and then keep left (always next to the small river). |
| 00:30 | At the signpost (before the valley station of the cable car for goods), keep left and cross the river. |
| 00:35 | Follow the forest road (always straight-ahead). |
| 00:55 | At the end of the forest road, the Wildfährte trail starts on the right hand side via a stream-bed. Follow the trail marked white-red-white. |
| 01:05 | At the crossing, stay right on the Wildfährte (follow the white-red-white markings). |
| 01:25 | After crossing a scree slope and climbing up an easy rock, the via ferrata starts. Put on your via ferrata set (“Klettersteigset”). |
| 01:30 | Master the traverse and follow the trail. |
| 02:05 | At the crossing, stay on the Wildfährte (straight). |
| 02:15 | Some climbing parts (I / I+) at the Wildfährte, also allowing impressive views backwards. |
| 02:40 | After the last traverse, exit the Wildfährte, enjoy a self-brought refreshment () and then follow the trail on the backside of the cliff. |
| 03:10 | Turn left into the Ochenhaltweg and follow the trail towards Habsburghaus. |
| 03:15 | Follow the trail marked white-green-white till the crossing with Ochsenhaltweg. |
| 03:16 | After passing the mountain huts, stay left and descent following the Ochsenhaltweg. |
| 03:20 | At the crossing between Bärenlochsteig, continue following the Ochsenhaltweg (straight). |
| 03:55 | Well deserved lunch break at Habsburghaus ( ). |
| 04:30 | Follow the trail downwards marked as Kaisersteig. |
| 05:00 | At the crossing, keep right and follow the trail towards Peter Jokel Steig. |
| 05:10 | Keep left and follow the forest road towards Peter Jokel Steig. Markings in this area are rare! |
| 05:30 | Turn left downwards into the Peter Jokel Steig (A) via ferrata and follow the ferrata downwards (marked red-white-red). |
| 06:30 | Cross the forest street and stay on the small trail downwards. |
| 06:45 | Turn right and follow the street back to the parking. |
| 07:00 | Back at the parking, end of the tour. |
