Climb up the Rax via the “Hoyossteig” and descend using the cable car
This tour leads through the exciting Höllental up to the Rax. Although the tour is long, it is fairly easy (cat. A/B, I-) and thus – in summer – suitable for beginners. Due to the exciting scenery, it is also enjoyable for experienced persons.
The tour starts at the small parking in front of the tunnel at the Höllental (GPS: 47.746355, 15.763405) where a small trail leads towards the Schönbrunnerstiege. Following a long hiking trail through the Höllental and a small hiking trail towards the entrance of Hoyossteig (see signpost) finally takes you to the entrance of the via ferrata: a giant rock followed by an iron ladder. At the exit, turn left and follow the trail downwards towards Höllentalaussicht and then to the mountain station of the cable car.
Tour Description
| 00:00 | Start at the parking lot Höllental (before the tunnel). The trail starts opposite of the parking lot. |
| 00:01 | Follow the trail parallel to the street (keep right 2x). |
| 00:05 | Follow the Schönbrunnerstiege (iron stairs). |
| 00:07 | Follow the blue route through the Höllental. |
| 00:40 | Turn right at the crossing to Hoyossteig (see signpost, marked red-white-red). |
| 01:05 | Turn right towards the entrance of Hoyossteig (difficult to find). |
| 01:10 | Break at the entrance of the Hoyossteig. Put on your via ferrata set (“Klettersteigset”) here. |
| 01:15 | Climb up the rock and the iron ladder (begin of the via ferrata). |
| 01:45 | Cross the traverse (Querung). |
| 04:00* | Exit of Hoyossteig. A perfect moment for a break (). Then, turn left into the Rudolfsteig. |
| 05:00* | Turn left downwards towards the Dirnbacher Hütte (see signposts). |
| 06:00* | At the Praterstern crossing, turn left and follow the path to the mountain station. |
| 06:30* | Well-deserved break ( ) at the Berggasthof. Descend via the cable car to the parking. |
*: Due to bad weather conditions, we decided to abort the tour. The remaining tour data are therefore only estimations.
