This thesis presents GAMMA, a platform and architecture neutral framework, that offers reusable authentication, authorization, and auditing mechanisms by providing declarative security mechanisms. Declarative security allows the decoupling of security logic completely from the application logic, allowing to write highly flexible, reusable but still security aware software components and applications. Furthermore, this concept is proven by presenting a reference implementation of this framework which offers several ready-to-use but still extensible authentication, authorization, and auditing mechanisms that can be transparently integrated into applications. ...

Today, security is recognized as an absolute need in application development. Programming environments offer mechanisms and concepts allowing an easy integration of security mechanisms into the application. ... The goal of this work is to promote the usage of declarative security mechanisms which allow the decoupling of security logic completely from the application logic. Furthermore, the framework GAMMA is presented, that offers several declarative authentication, access control, and auditing mechansms that can be transparently integrated into software applicaitons.

Web services represent an important technology for distributed applications and will replace various other technologies for distributed application development soon. ... However, for authorization no appropriate solution is available and ready to use. ... Based on existing authorization solutions and the defined requirements, a Web service authorization framework is developed. We describe concepts and the design of the proposed framework and give an overview of selected implementation aspects (e.g. authorization data access, descriptive deployment). The framework emphasizes easy deployment of Web Service authorization and is ready to use. Practical experience using the framework concludes the paper.

E-commerce applications have diverse security requirements ranging from business-to-business over business-to-consumer to consumer-toconsumer types of applications. This range of requirements cannot be handled adequately by oné single security model although role-based access controls depict a promising fundament for generic high-level security. ... Therefore, we present a general-purpose software framework providing security mechanisms such as authentication, access controls, and auditing for Java software development. The framework is called GAMMA and offers multiple high-level security models that may even be used concurrently to cover such diverse security requirements as found within e-commerce environments.

Modern application architectures require flexible and ready-to-use distributed authorization mechanisms. We thus compare existing solutions for distributed authorization such as Sesame, Adage, JSEF, Kava to our newly developed framework GAMMA. We then evaluate the systems according to several criteria, including interoperability, compatibility, architecture requirements, expressiveness, and capabilities in regard to authentication, access control, and auditing.
